03 · Where to ask
Seven places to keep a secret.
From the Andes to the Pacific to the islands. Each one has its hour, and its hiding place. Tell us which feels like you, or let us suggest one.
Quito · duskA lookout above the city
At 2,850 metres the city lights come on below you just after the sun goes. Itchimbía, the Panecillo or a quieter terrace: we choose the one that’s calmest that week.
- The hour
- Dusk, between about six and half past six, all year
- Hiding spot
- Among the other travellers at the railing
The Andes · morning or last lightA hacienda under Cotopaxi
Courtyards, fireplaces and gardens, with the 5,897-metre volcano on the horizon when the clouds lift. We pick the hacienda, the terrace and the table.
- The hour
- Often clearest early in the day; cosiest by the fire after dark
- Hiding spot
- Behind the bougainvillea on the terrace
The Galápagos · sunset, where permittedA beach at the edge of the world
The national park keeps set hours and rules at its visitor sites, so we look for beaches and terraces where an evening moment is allowed, and plan the day around them. Allyson travels as tour leader; inside the park, certified naturalist guides lead.
- The hour
- Sunset over the Pacific
- Hiding spot
- A long lens, at a respectful distance (from the sea lions too)
Imbabura · morningCuicocha crater lake
A crater lake at the foot of Cotacachi volcano, with two islands in the middle and a trail along the rim, about two hours north of Quito.
- The hour
- Morning, when the water is often stillest
- Hiding spot
- Around the next bend of the rim trail
Guayaquil · eveningLas Peñas
Guayaquil’s oldest neighbourhood: 444 numbered steps of painted houses up Cerro Santa Ana to the lighthouse, with the river below. Allyson’s home city.
- The hour
- Evening, as the hillside lights up
- Hiding spot
- A café doorway halfway up the steps
The coast · sunsetA beach at Olón
A long, easy-going beach on the Pacific, where the sun goes down into the sea and the stars come out over the water.
- The hour
- Sunset, then a sky full of stars
- Hiding spot
- Down the beach, among the surfers
Mindo · all dayThe cloud forest
Mist, waterfalls and hummingbirds, about two hours from Quito. For couples who would rather ask among the ferns than in front of a view.
- The hour
- Soft light all day under the canopy
- Hiding spot
- Behind a curtain of ferns
Anywhere in Ecuador · your hourThe place only you know
The street where you met, the volcano on your first trip, the beach from a photo on their fridge. Tell us about it, and we’ll find the spot, the hour and the hiding place.
