Travellers walking between rows of vines on an equatorial vineyard in coastal Ecuador

Guayaquil, your way

A day in an equatorial vineyard

Wine from the middle of the world: walk the rows of a 38-hectare vineyard in the countryside outside Guayaquil, try your hand at pruning, taste grapes from the vine and four wines at the main house. On request.

The story

Wine where nobody expects it

Vines are not what people picture an hour and a half from Guayaquil, and that is the point. Allyson ran this day for travellers who wanted to see how grapes grow at the equator, meet the people who make the wine and spend a slow day in the countryside. She still organises it on request.

  1. 08:30

    The briefing on the road

Pickup in Guayaquil and about an hour and a half into the countryside. On the way your guide explains the puzzle you are about to see: how vines manage without winter at the equator, why the growers prune when they do, and what that means for the glass at the end of the day.

  2. 10:00

    Secateurs in your hand

You walk the rows with the people who tend them, between vines that run toward the hills. They show you where to cut and why, and hand you the secateurs. Then the best part: a wine grape picked straight from the bunch, thick-skinned and sweeter than you expect, warm from the sun.

  3. 11:30

    Into the cellar

Out of the sun and into the cool of the winemaking cellar. Tanks, barrels and the smell of fermenting fruit; the team walks you through how the grapes you just tasted become wine, from the press to the bottle. Ask the questions you always wondered about: they are happy to answer.

  4. 12:30

Four glasses at the main house

A tasting of four of the estate’s wines at the main house, poured and explained one by one. Afterwards, time is yours: photos among the vines, a slow walk or binoculars for the birds that live around the vineyard. Then the drive back to Guayaquil in the late afternoon light.

On time pick up from our hotel. Tour around the highlights of the city. Guide was very knowledgeable and personable but the city itself is just not that scenic.

Wir hatten einen sehr schönen Tag mit Allyson. Bereits im Vorfeld war Allyson sehr kommunikativ und der Ausflug selbst war bestens organisiert. Vielen Dank Allyson gerne wieder.

This was a great day! I was the only one on the tour and my guide Alison, and her friend Mikela, did a superb job. For the dry forest we visited the Cerro Blanco private reserve where Alison had engaged a wonderful local guide who's knowledge of all things was exceptional. Later a visit to various parts of Guayaquil gave me a good incite into this city's "vibe". A truly enjoyable day with two charming and knowledgeable young ladies. Highly recommended!

We really enjoyed the food and city walk tour presented by Allyson. Her passion for the local product is first class. The market experience was genuine as this is the market where she normally shops. We would highly recommend this tour.

What a fabulous day! Allyson was a terrific guide. She listened to our requests and made sure we were safe and well taken care of all day. The mercado experience was truly amazing. We got a great snap shot of Quayaquil and excellent food. Thanks again for a wonderful day!

Allyson was a wonderful guide who showed us the highlights of her lovely city. She surprised us by taking us to a cocoa shop where we got to pick up some Ecuadorian chocolate. We enjoyed our morning with Allyson and highly recommend her.

My wife and I had a lot of fun on this tour. The waterfall walk was very enjoyable and the visit to the Shuar neighborhood and homestead was enlightening.
