Travellers crossing a hanging bridge in the Bucay cloud forest with a local ranger

Forest & Amazon

Bucay waterfalls, sugar cane and a Shuar family

Two hours from Guayaquil the Andes begin in cloud forest: a local ranger leads you to the waterfalls over hanging bridges and wet rocks, you press sugar cane juice by hand, and a Shuar family welcomes you to their home.

The story

Where the coastal plain meets the mountains

Bucay sits where the flat country around Guayaquil ends and the western slopes of the Andes rise into cloud. It is close enough for a day and wild enough to feel far away: rivers, waterfalls, hanging bridges, sugar cane, and a Shuar family who share their customs with visitors. Part of every tour supports a social or environmental project.

  1. 07:00

Into the cloud forest with a ranger

Pickup in Guayaquil, then about two hours across rice and banana country until the first green hills rise and the air turns cool and damp. In Bucay you meet the local ranger who lives and works right here. The trail starts gently, then tilts: roots, river stones, and a hanging bridge that sways just enough to make everyone laugh.

  2. Late morning

    Under the falls

You hear the waterfall before you see it. The ranger knows the way between the rocks, where the footing is good and where the pool is deep enough to step in. Swim if you like, in cold water straight off the mountain, or sit on a warm stone and watch the spray catch the light. Children scramble, parents follow, and everyone ends up a little wet.

  3. Midday

Sugar cane juice, made by hand

Back near the road, a hand press and a pile of freshly cut cane. You feed the stalks through and put your own weight into it, and green-gold juice runs into the glass, sweet and cold. It is the traditional way, and it tastes of the field it came from. Brunch or lunch can be added here, a local plate to go with your effort.

  4. Afternoon

A visit with a Shuar family

In the afternoon a Shuar family welcomes you to their homestead. They share how they live, their customs, the plants and crafts they keep, and answer whatever you are curious about. It is a conversation, not a performance, and the questions you bring matter. Then the drive back to Guayaquil as the light goes, muddy shoes and all.

My wife and I had a lot of fun on this tour. The waterfall walk was very enjoyable and the visit to the Shuar neighborhood and homestead was enlightening.

Had a great time with Allyson on this tour. Everything was perfect. She was on time for pickup at hotel to start the tour. The drive was a long one, but Allyson made it fun, informative and relaxing. Upon arrival we met up with a local who lived and worked right at our destination. We headed into the cloud forest and enjoyed a refreshing hike and dip in a fabulous waterfall. With the local guiding the way to the falls, there was no worry about getting lost. The entire tour couldn't have been more fun!

On time pick up from our hotel. Tour around the highlights of the city. Guide was very knowledgeable and personable but the city itself is just not that scenic.

Wir hatten einen sehr schönen Tag mit Allyson. Bereits im Vorfeld war Allyson sehr kommunikativ und der Ausflug selbst war bestens organisiert. Vielen Dank Allyson gerne wieder.

This was a great day! I was the only one on the tour and my guide Alison, and her friend Mikela, did a superb job. For the dry forest we visited the Cerro Blanco private reserve where Alison had engaged a wonderful local guide who's knowledge of all things was exceptional. Later a visit to various parts of Guayaquil gave me a good incite into this city's "vibe". A truly enjoyable day with two charming and knowledgeable young ladies. Highly recommended!

Alyson is an excellent guide. Her English is top notch & knowledge of the city & the country’s history is masterful. In addition she is a very nice person that we enjoyed interacting with.

We really enjoyed the food and city walk tour presented by Allyson. Her passion for the local product is first class. The market experience was genuine as this is the market where she normally shops. We would highly recommend this tour.

What a fabulous day! Allyson was a terrific guide. She listened to our requests and made sure we were safe and well taken care of all day. The mercado experience was truly amazing. We got a great snap shot of Quayaquil and excellent food. Thanks again for a wonderful day!
